Building Science II

Project 1 : A Case Study on Room Acoustic

An auditorium is a special room built to enable an audience to hear and watch performances at venues such as theatres and music halls. For movie theatres, the number of auditoriums is expressed as the number of screens. A successful design of auditoriums muchly depend on its acoustic design which include the auditorium layout plus absorption materials used. It is essential to preserve and enhance the desired sound and to eliminate noise and undesired sound. In group of 6, students are to conduct a case study on auditorium locally. It is going to be an ‘observe and report’ case study.

Project 2 : Integration Project

This project aims to integrate students' understanding of the principles of lighting design in the context their final design project of studio 04 / 05.  It will encompasses on artificial and daylighting systems also will implement the PSALI design strategies.  The objective of this project are as follows to show understanding of artificial lighting and daylighting strategies in their final design.  To solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues.  To design spaces incorporating artificial and daylighting.

We will need to identify 2 significant spaces in our final design for implementing the artificial and the daylighting strategies.  Students are to produce to followings throughout this project :

1. A brief site analysis

2. Overall floor plan

3. Floor plan of Space A and B

4. Reflected ceiling plans

5. Lighting contours

6. Types of lamps to be used

7. Reflectance on walls, ceilings , floors

8. Daylighting calculation

9. Lumen method calculation

10. Lighting Design proposal
